Friday Dinghy Night 2023 Season Recap

Rick Fontenot | Published on 9/6/2023

Once again, Friday Dinghy Night has proven to be one of the more popular sailing activities at WCSC. Participation was up, even compared to last year’s growing numbers. Sone metrics:

     Number of scheduled race days………………………………………………………9

Number of days racing was conducted……………………………………………….8

     Number of races completed…………………………………………………………..14

Minimum number of boats on a race night…………………………………… ……..6

Maximum number of boats on a race night…………………………………………18

Number of skippers who sailed at least one race…………………………  ………45

Number of skippers who sailed the number required to qualify for ranking…….…8

Number of skippers who don’t regularly race in the CB or KB fleets………….….22

Friday Dinghy Night accommodated a diverse fleet. The dominant class (in the number of participating dinghies) was the Force 5, with an average of between 4 and 5 per night. Also present during the series were Flying Scots, Lasers, Sunfish, O’pen Skiffs (Bics), Capri 13, Wayfarer, Byte CII, Melges 14, MC Scow, 420, and multihulls Weta and Hobie 16.

Most nights produced 2 races, although on some nights failing wind or approaching darkness allowed only one race. Only one scheduled night produced no racing; not enough wind to even set a course. EVERY night produced a post-race social with beverages and a meal of some sort. And we think that is the best part of Friday Dinghy Night!
