2026 Dam Distance Race
28 March 2026 After Action Report
Thanks to all who participated in this event!
It was held as scheduled.
At the time of the skippers’ meeting the winds were NNE at 13 gusting to 22 knots with clear skies and temperature of 51F. The forecast was for clear skies, a high temperature of 65F, and winds to shift toward ENE and moderate slightly.
We had 17 boats registered for the race and barbecue dinner, with about 50 participants overall.
The Race Committee decided on the full course (“J”), with a downwind start at S15 and turning at #11.
A total of 10 boats elected to start the race: 3 in the Racer class, 7 in the Cruiser class, and no Rompers.
The wind freshened around start time (1104 EDT) with estimated gusts in the high 20’s. Two boats were OCS but decided to continue anyway. One was OCS but returned to make a legal start. Three boats missed one or more marks along the course and retired (with some unofficially sailing the full course). Over the course of the afternoon, the wind did veer eastward and moderated slightly.
At an elapsed time of 3:30:00, Will DeHart in Thunderduck finished the course in first place with a 15-minute lead. The last finisher crossed at ET of 4:14:00. There were no safety incidents reported, but there was general difficulty in locating the marks in the less familiar distant segments of the course. (All marks were present!)
The after-race party was well attended and the food was delicious as always. Alas, Will DeHart did not attend and, as per the event rules, was awarded a finish of DNP (Did Not Party.)
First place in the Racer fleet went to Greg Torrisi and second place to George Masson.
First in the Cruiser class was David Routh and second Zane Reeves.
Full results are posted below.
Special thanks to Ronnie Ashmore and his assistant Ron Sanga for the excellent barbecue, to Allison Fontenot for her special potato salad and slaw, to the Race Committee, and to the Club for supporting this event. And thanks to all the skippers and crews who turned out!
