Recap-Around Andersonville island Alone (or not) 2016

This year’s event could have been called Around Andersonville Island (or not) 2016. Even with ten boats registered by Thursday, most were concerned with the weather forecast. It was going to be windless. Several forecast sites predicted 3 mph at start time, then diminishing during the race. And it was going to be hot-95 with a heat index near 100.

Despite this, eight of the 10 registered skippers and crews attended the skipper’s meeting at 10:00 on the clubhouse deck. The heat was not severe yet, but the only sign of breeze was very light texture on the near-shore water. This did not extend very far into the lake. The skipper’s meeting was delayed about 15 minutes in case the two absent skippers might show; they did not. One skipper withdrew immediately. Most of the remaining skippers voiced their concern for the lack of wind and abundance of forecast heat. A vote was taken, and all but one desired to not race. The organizers decided to honor the protocol of not sending RC out with fewer than three boats competing.

We want to thank those that registered for this event and made the trip to the Club with the hope the forecasters would be wrong. There is talk that the event may have an expanded organizing committee and a different calendar date next year. Stay tuned…
